Wrapping up a Wednesday

As of today I'm down 8.6 pounds. Not bad for six weeks, I guess. It seems slow but it's more than a pound a week. I have to remember I'm not a contestant on the Biggest Loser. I'm making changes that fit my lifestyle and the weight is coming off. Slowly. And, the number I need to lose is going down, too. So, that's another way to encourage myself. Only 46.2 pounds to go now, compared to the original 60 I thought I had to lose. That makes it seem like a lot, doesn't it?

Isn't it funny how we can keep ourselves psyched up even when things are inching along? You're making progress...just not at neck-break speed. And, that's OK. But you have to keep yourself energized and remind yourself not to give up. What do you do to stay motivated even when things aren't snowballing? Share your tricks, I need to learn from you!

In the meantime, I hope you have a FABULOUS sleep.

  1. Great job! Noah didn't build the arc in a day. :D Just keep your eye on the prize!

  2. So, this is going to take something like three years?! AAAAHHH!!! :p Ha ha! I'm just kidding. I totally hear what you're saying. What a great phrase to repeat to ourselves when things aren't happening as quickly as we'd like. "Noah didn't build that boat in just one day!" Thanks for sharing your trick with me, Kim!

  3. Jill - Congrats on the 8.6 pounds. Way to go.
Here's my update - I am also down about 8 pounds and having trouble breaking that 9 pound mark. My frustration levels are rising on a daily basis. I always seem to be telling someone "Sorry, I can't have that." My husband wanted Mexican food for Cinco de Mayo and I couldn't find anything on the menu that fit the SCD diet. My son wanted spaghetti and Italian bread the other day; I couldn't eat with him so I made a special salad. We stopped at Subway for lunch and, with the exception of a salad, there was nothing available; even the salad dressings had sugar, soy or gluten in them.

I am weary of proteins, fruits and vegetables. I want a piping hot piece of Papa John's pizza.

Can you share some of what you eat on a daily basis?

  4. Meredith, I'm having the same struggle, my friend! Usually I do well with a Lara Bar for Breakfast, a salad with some kind of meat (usually chicken or tuna) for lunch and some kind of meat (again fish or chicken or sometimes turkey) and some veggies for dinner. I also have nuts and raisins for snacks or veggies and hummus. But, lately it has been H.A.R.D. It's that special female time for me, so that probably has a lot to do with it. But, I'm also craving diet soda more, which doesn't help with weight loss. And, I'm drinking less water. Got to get back on track. As far as dressings go, I've been using salsa or avocado (or guacamole) or a combination of these for dressings if I can't find one w/o sugar. Don't know if that's helpful. I also think Subway has oil and vinegar or at least oil for their sandwiches. Maybe they would let you put that on your salad? I just have a little over a month to go. It's not that long, really. Just need to find motivation to get through. What if we hold each other accountable for the rest of this week? Do you like that idea?

  5. Okay, Jill - accountability it is, except I broke down yesterday and had some rice crackers and a gluten/soy/dairy free pizza crust. I am paying the price today. My gut is bloated, my hands are a bit swollen and I did not sleep well last night. In hope of alleviating the symptoms, I am drinking lots of water, watered-down juice and eating fruits and veggies today.

Here's what I can share about the positives this far -
I feel better than I have in a long time, years probably. My depression symptoms are almost gone, which amazes me. I have been on anti-depressants off and on for years and never felt this good while taking the meds. I am also not as moody -what? who said that? Not me, the queen of moodiness. Things that would have sent me over the edge two months ago are being taken in stride now. Those two major changes are worth it (okay, it's probably not all food related as I have been trying hard to rely more on God, too). I plan on sticking to some of this diet for as long as I can, like staying away from dairy. I don't miss dairy at all. I haven't quite decided how to approach the wheat/gluten things yet. I may need a doctor's opinion on that.

  7. Meredith, you're doing better than I am. I took Alyssa to McDonald's today and got what I thought would be the best choice - the Santa Fe salad with grilled chicken. I shouldn't have used the dressing, but I did. And then, for some reason, when Alyssa was done with her pudding from home, I just picked it up and finished it. What?! Why in the world did I do that? It's a healhty pudding that's gluten free. But, it's not sugar or dairy free. I didn't even think about it, just finished it off. Weird. And, the salad also had a couple of things I should have asked them to leave off but was in a hurry and didn't. It's in those moments when I haven't planned it out that I find myself in trouble. So, tomorrow my goal will be to stop and think and plan out my meals before jumping in. Also, I'm with you on the grain thing. It's a little tough to avoid it completely especially if it's whole grain. I have backed down a little on the grain free part of this eating plan. Last night I made a very healthy meal for the family with whole wheat spaghetti, ground turkey, and organic veggie sauce. I didn't worry about the pasta and enjoyed the meal with my husband and daughter. I won't eat grains every day but I think something like that every now and again is OK. As long as it's still a whole food...I'm not going to beat myself up about it. Still, I have to get back on track after today's lunch. The plan for dinner is some healthy light Progresso soup, I think. Thanks for holding me accountable!
